Earth fridge starter questions (ask before you dig)
An earth fridge (buried cooler, trash-can cellar, shallow pit) is cheaper than a full root cellar — and easier to regret if you dig first. Use these questions. Longer overview: root cellar / earth fridge article.
Site and safety
- Where do utilities run? Call before you dig (811 in the US)
- Does water pool there after rain? Wet pits mold food fast
- Is the spot shaded in summer and accessible in mud/snow?
- Can you keep rodents out (tight lid, hardware cloth, no food scraps)?
Crop fit (honest)
- What will you actually store — potatoes, carrots, cabbage, squash?
- Do those crops need cool+humid vs cool+dry? One pit rarely serves both
- How much harvest volume? A buried cooler is for overflow, not a farm
- Will you check weekly? Unmonitored pits become compost
Rules and neighbors
- HOA / lease / landlord: is buried structure allowed?
- Septic / well setbacks on your lot?
- Floodplain or high water table? Skip digging; try a cool basement corner instead
When to skip digging
- You only grow salad greens and summer squash (eat them fresh)
- You have a consistently cool garage / basement shelf already
- You will not harvest enough roots this year to fill a cooler
Alternatives without a pit: food storage without a cellar · seed saving · when free advice is enough.
If storage is one piece of a fuller backyard system (beds → water → season extension → storage), a structured guide can help after you know whether a pit even makes sense:
